Associate Professor in Psychiatry

Dr. Amer is an Associate Professor with the Dept. of Psychological Medicine, University Malaya and consultant psychiatrist in both the University Malaya Medical and Specialist Centre. He received his undergraduate medical training in New Zealand (University of Otago), his psychiatry training in University Malaya and completed his PhD from New Zealand (University of Otago). He has fellowships in psychosocial and rehabilitation psychiatry from Korea through the Yongin World Health Organization Collaborating Centre and also in Smoking Cessation from the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Smoking Cessation and Treatment of Tobacco Dependence. He has also received his smoking cessation specialist certification from New Zealand.
Dr Amer is particularly interested in mood disorders, anxiety disorders and addiction psychiatry. He has written on depression particularly and also extensively on alcohol use disorder and smoking. He was attached to the National Addiction Centre in Christchurch and is now with University Malaya Centre for Addiction Sciences (UMCAS).
He is active in advocating for better mental health having given many public lectures on psychiatry and sharing his thoughts to the public through the Malaysian Medical Gazette and also Medical Tweet Malaysia. He believes in promoting good mental health through awareness activities which he hopes will de-stigmatize mental illness. He is a life member of the Malaysian Psychiatric Association and consultant psychiatrist to Befrienders KL
