Dr. Leo Bey Fen is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya (UM). She obtained her PhD from the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), Imperial College London (UK) in 2015. She is the current consultant and manager at the Electron Microscopy Services, Central Unit of Advanced Research Imaging (CENTUARI), UM. Her research interest includes synthesis and characterisation of nanomaterials, functionalisation and applications of nanomaterials (e.g. biosensors for pathogen or toxin identification, antimicrobial agents, drug delivery, nanomagnetic gloves) and nanosafety & toxicology assessment of nanomaterials. She had published more than 30 high-impact factor academic journal papers and conference proceedings. One of her first-authored research paper ‘The Stability of Silver Nanoparticles in a Model of Pulmonary Surfactant’ in the ES&T and noted as a science highlight in the UK Diamond Light Source Annual review. Her research group had established collaboration between UM, Imperial College London, top class research groups in National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) in the UK; toxicology group from New Jersey, US and Diamond Light Source at Oxfordshire. Recently, Leo joined the Innovation Forum Kuala Lumpur (IFKL) as a deputy scientific chairperson. An IFKL event – “ Entrepreneuship in Health Care” will be organised at University of Malaya (UM) to facilitate the communication between academia, industry and the public sector to venture into the healthcare industry.
